Meet the doctor: Practice Philosophy and Story
Dr. Alonzo T. Sexton is a trailblazing orthopedic surgeon with over 19 years of clinical experience, specializing in sports medicine at professional, collegiate, and amateur levels. He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and holds Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification. Dr. Sexton earned his Bachelor of Arts in Human Biology from Stanford University and his Doctor of Medicine from Emory University School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Emory University Hospital, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sexton has demonstrated expertise in treating a wide range of orthopedic conditions, with a particular focus on shoulder and knee injuries. His surgical specialties include procedures addressing shoulder arthritis, such as shoulder replacements, labral repairs for shoulder dislocations, and arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs. In knee surgery, he has expertise in ACL reconstructions utilizing minimally invasive techniques, such as all-inside ACL reconstruction, meniscus repairs, and surgeries addressing the patella. Additionally, Dr. Sexton is skilled in treating lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) through arthroscopic surgery and managing conditions such as trochanteric bursitis with arthroscopic IT band release.
Dr. Sexton has served as a team physician for the New York Jets, the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, and Clark Atlanta University, providing medical care to athletes across various disciplines. He is a fellow with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and membership in the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine. He is also a Sports Sector Member of the Physical Activity Alliance. His contributions to the field have been recognized with honors such as the Castle Connolly Top Doctor award in 2022 and 2023, and the RICE Award for healthcare and wellness in 2022.
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Sexton is a thought leader in health information technology and the application of blockchain in healthcare. He has a keen interest in remote patient monitoring and artificial intelligence, advocating for the integration of advanced technologies to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
