(HealthDay News) -- Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV), a contagious germ. Although some people show no symptoms, others develop unpleasant sores on the mouth or lips.
Normally, cold sores will go away on their own within a few weeks.
Antiviral medicines can speed up the healing process and other medicines can help ease discomfort, MedlinePlus says.
