Health Tip: Minimizing Shortness of Breath

(HealthDay News) -- Shortness of breath is marked by difficulty breathing or intense tightening in the chest. Medical problems, strenuous exercise, extreme temperatures, obesity and high altitude can all trigger shortness of breath, says Mayo Clinic.

To keep chronic shortness of breath at bay, Mayo Clinic suggests:

  • Exercise regularly.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Take time to adjust to changes in elevation.
  • Avoid extremes in temperature.
  • Avoid exposure to chemical fumes and secondhand smoke.
  • Discuss with your doctor what to do if symptoms get worse.

If you use supplemental oxygen, Mayo Clinic reminds you to regularly check that your equipment works properly.
